Belgium Meets India

For the past 30 years, the Ensemble Gilles Binchois has performed a repertoire of music from the 15th and 16th centuries and devotional songs of medieval Christendom with enduring enthusiasm. Over the years, the Ensemble has also embraced other music genres. Building bridges and dialogue between cultures most notably through medieval monodies, they have dedicated several albums to Indian, Moroccan, Iranian and Spanish music.

In the late 1990s, a meeting between Dominique Vellard (founder and director of the Ensemble Gilles Binchois) and Aruna Sairam (a famous Carnatic singer), led to a joint research project resulting in some thirty recitals across the world and the recording of the album Sources, Chants dévotionnels de l’Inde du sud et de l’occident medieval (“Sources, devotional songs of southern India and medieval Europe”).

Following this, the Ensemble increased their collaboration with different voices and cultures, extending the dialogue to include the melodic instruments that accompany vocals in various music traditions: the violin in Carnatic singing, the oud in Arab music, the fiddle in the medieval tradition, as well as percussion linked to different music styles (mridangam, zarb and daf). For europalia.india, the Ensemble Gilles Binchois will accompany the Carnatic vocals of Aruna Sairam, with H. N. Bhaskar on violin and the percussionist Satish Kumar on mrindangam.
