Umakant and Ramakant Gundecha, better known as the Gundecha Brothers, are among the best performers of dhrupad (traditional sung poetry of northern India). If the dhrupad is the most classical style of singing in India, the important role played by improvisation gives it a contemporary feel, which explains the recent renewed craze for this art form, both in India and worldwide. After a classic education combining music and university, the Gundecha Brothers specialized in dhrupad under the masters Ustad Zia Fariduddin Dagar and Ustad Zia Mohiuddin. Ever since, they have been singing the most beautiful poetry by Tulsidas, Kabir, Padmakar, and Nirala throughout the world. In addition to concerts, they also give workshops at music festivals and at several institutions around the world. They have also founded an institute in Bhopal, dedicated to reviving the dhrupad tradition.
