Concept & choreography: Kalpana Raghuraman

Kalpana Raghuraman was born and raised in The Netherlands. Her mother taught her Bharata Natyam from an early age and led her on the path from which Kalpana would not stray. Passionate about dancing, Kalpana completed her training with great maters in India. She took the opportunity of her trips to India during her Master’s degree in Cultural Anthropology to research the changing dynamic in knowledge transfer concerning the Bharata Natyam. She sees herself as “a bridge builder bridges between cultures, traditions and people”. And between ages might we add, as Kalpana now proposes an original, genuine and very contemporary form of the traditional ancestral Bharata Natyam. Her work as a choreographer is based on contemporary dance rooted in classical Indian dances.

For a couple of years, Kalpana has been an artist in residence at the Korzo Theater in The Hague, a national production house specialising in contemporary dance. She has created several choreographies such as “Kiss of Life”, “Towards Dawns”, “Lost in Grey”. Invited by the choreographer Pedro Goucha Gomes, she appeared as a dancer in “Toxic Tears”. She is often invited to choreograph shows abroad, for example in Malaysia and in India. She lives between The Hague and Brussels where she has settled.
