During EUROPALIA ESPANA, 1,509,215 people attended. 741 events, including 32 exhibitions, 142 concerts, operas and ballets, 201 theatre performances, 21 conferences and debates, and 345 film screenings.
The festival's main exhibitions included Splendour of Spain and the Belgian cities, Santiago de Compostela, Picasso, Miro, Dali, and Goya.
Luis de Pablo and Salvador Brotons performed as part of the music programme, which included never-before-seen works. Two other major events were the world premiere of a dance spectacle called España Baila and a youth exchange programme that allowed 1000 young Spaniards to come to Belgium and 1000 young Belgians to visit Spain.
The EUROPALIA Literary Prize was awarded to Juan Goytisolo.
