Les Drapiers, EUROPALIA

Commissioner Denise Biernaux

The gallery Les Drapiers has been working with EUROPALIA for many years now. For this edition dedicated to Indonesia, Les Drapiers focuses on two processes used to create patterns on fabric, very present in Indonesia: ikat and batik. These processes, called ‘reserves’, use wax, dyes and ligatures to prevent the colours from reaching certain parts of the cloth.

The singularity of the exhibition Ikat . Batik - Reserve of meanings is that it links the know-how and meaning of these two types of textile creations.

Issued from private collections, a large array of old photographs, technical and dyeing material, fabrics and many other things invite you to discover and wonder about the textile language in Indonesia, and its link to the sacred, the ritual, and the identity and status of the wearer.

The high sophistication of the techniques and the time required for the creation imply esthetically, technically and symbolically exceptional fabrics.
