The exhibition Inspiring Indonesia sparks an inspiring dialogue between ancient objects and contemporary audiovisual works. Young artists Elisabeth Ida Mulyani, Ada Van Hoorebeke and Jimmy Hendrickx join more established artists Roy Villevoye and Dick van der Harst to contribute their unique and personal interpretations of an Indonesia that is deeply rooted in indigenous traditions. Their stories revolve around real people, stratified landscapes and multiple music genres.

The known and unknown Indonesia are addressed. Indigenous objects and traditions that appear charming to us are in fact survival tools for the population. This confrontation aims to shatter the illusion of Indonesia as an exotic land and to question opposing stereotypes of ‘then’ and ‘now’, ‘us’ and ‘them’. Little by little, ‘our’ expectations of the ideas and customs of so-called ‘others’ become more ambiguous. In this interdisciplinary project around the exchange of knowledge, the artists address several cultural themes through their research, which will undoubtedly leave a strong impression and encourage further dialogue.
