Gamelan is reimagined as Moondog
Moondog is reimagined as gamelan

... by renowned Javanese composer Iwan Gunawan and Moondog’s friend Stefan Lakatos.

Featuring instruments built especially for the occasion, this performance takes gamelan out of its traditional context, taking on the experimental yet optimistic compositions of Moondog, using the western tuning system. Almost Minimalist in its construction, the influential outsider composer´s melodies resonate amid the controlled chaos of gamelan. Leading the ensemble is Iwan Gunawan, a contemporary gamelan composer known for combining tradition with the use of electronics and computers, and Stefan Lakatos, an old friend of Moondog, who performs using Moondog´s unique percussion instrument - the trimba - given to him by the composer.

Few composers are the source of as much intrigue as Moondog. A blind man from Kansas transplanted to New York City, he dressed as a Viking and survived for many years on the streets. His compositions reflect his experiences of hearing his way through the city – motifs borrowed from Jazz, Oriental, Classical and Native American music unwind over the constant beating of a tom-tom drum, like the thumping of a subway train, and several other compositions using the odd beats 5/4 and 7/4, rarely used in western classical music.

Iwan Gunawan & Kyai Fatahillah

Iwan Gunawan is considered to be one of the most important contemporary composers of the present-day West Javan culture. Without reneging on his roots, Gunawan is also a master of Western keys and techniques. Gunawan and his ensemble even reworked Steve Reich’s composition ‘Six Marimbas’ for gamelan at the time.

Stefan Lakatos

Swedish percussionist Stefan Lakatos was a close friend of Moondog. In the late ‘80s, Moondog entrusted Lakatos with his self-built and unique percussion instrument, the trimba. In 1981 he became Moondog´s representative in Scandinavia and choosed to dedicate his life to his music and have continued spreading knowledge of Moondog as a world wide musician for over 35 years. Lakatos has played many concerts together with Moondog and also released several CDs with Moondog´s compositions. He has played concerts in Holland with the Dutch "Calefax" wind quintet and performed at the Barbican with Prof. Dr. Paul Jordan and also played several concerts with Moondog´s favourite pianist: Dominique Ponty. In 2007 he was invited to perform at the Carnegie Hall in New York, by the two American violin players, Keita Fukushima and Louis Nicolia.
