For decades, the music charts in Aceh have been dominated by dangdut (hybrid Indonesian pop) and cover versions of Indian hits. Their immense popularity is threatening traditional Acehnese music. Despite its rich melodies and unique instruments, the latter has difficulty in reaching today’s youth.

Singer Rafly and his band Kande have succeeded in breathing new life into the musical traditions of their native region, integrating 16th century Sufi influences into their rock and marrying electric guitars with local instruments. Their repertoire mainly comprises of ancient poems and lullabies sung in Acehnese. Kande makes it a point of honour to sing in this richly nuanced and complex language, which Acehnese youth find increasingly difficult to speak or understand.
