Indonesia is a fabulous archipelago with many artistic and cultural treasures. Among them, wayang puppet theatre, a traditional and popular Indonesian entertainment, designated by UNESCO in 2003 as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.

Although the puppets come in different forms and styles, two main types exist: the three-dimensional wooden puppet – wayang golek and wayang klitik – and the flat, shadow theatre puppet cut out of leather – wayang kulit.

With Leather Gods, Wooden Heroes, the Musée International du Carnaval et du Masque invites you to immerse yourself in the enchanted world of Indonesian puppets, to discover their costumes, stories and legends while being carried away by their music.
