Nan Achnas graduated from the Faculty of Film and Television, Jakarta Institute of the Arts, majoring in directing. She then took up a master’s degree in Film Studies at the University of East Anglia, United Kingdom and is presently completing her doctoral degree at the School of Art, Design and Media, NTU.
Nan is an award-winning filmmaker of numerous documentaries (i.e The Little Gayo Singer Invisible Garments, Expensive Soles and Soul Custodian) and feature films such as Kuldesak, The Flag, Whispering Sands and The Photograph, which won the Grand Prize at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. She has also produced award-winning films such as Pesantren: 3 Wishes 3 Loves, Khalifah and The Window directed by Nurman Hakim.

Kuldesak is an omnibus film on the lives and problems of young urbans of the 90s in Jakarta. It is a mixture of comedy, drama and action. The film mainly deals with how one struggles to achieve one’s dream or happiness and confronts changes of values in a modern city dwelling.
Set right before the downfall of Soeharto, the film tells of four young people are facing different situations in their lives. These circumstances demand them to make a choice. The film that started the New Indonesian Cinema.
