Otniel Tasman Lengger Laut
Otniel Tasman's works are deeply rooted in the traditions of his native Banyumas region, Central Java. His recent works investigate in particular the lengger lanang dance, an eroticised fertility dance traditionally performed by men. In recent decades however moral concerns have increasingly led to lengger lanang being performed by women.
In this stunning contemporary creation of the lengger dance, six male dancers reclaim and reinvent the lengger tradition. Lengger Laut is at the same time a vivid and exceptional contribution to the discussion of gender roles in Indonesia as well as a vibrant revival and development of the lengger lanang tradition.
