The Indonesian singer-songwriter Peni Candra Rini has three albums to her name. She has worked with famous artists such as Robert Wilson, Rahayu Supanggah and Iain Grandage and performed at numerous international music festivals. Peni Candra Rini is one of the rare contemporary singers to have mastered the sindhen, a Javanese vocal style for the female voice.
For the show ONTOSOROH, Peni has joined forces with the Australian dancer and choreographer Ade Suharto. Together, they are inspired by the life of Nyai Ontosoroh, a heroine who fought against colonial powers in This Earth of Mankind, the literary classic by Pramoedya Ananta Toer. The show combines Ade’s classical Javanese dance with traditional and contemporary compositions and Peni’s magnificent voice.
