Tesla Manaf (°1987) has been fascinated by classical and contemporary jazz from a young age. A virtuoso of classical guitar, Tesla won an impressive number of prizes before reaching the age of 18, including the prestigious Yamaha Music Award. Aged 19, Tesla launched himself into progressive jazz with resounding success.
He won the prize for best beginner at the Jazz Goes to Campus festival and his eponymous first album was nominated in the categories for best guitarist, composer, jazz album and jazz artist by Downbeat magazine. His sources of inspiration as a composer include Frank Zappa and Pat Metheny but also the meanderings and subtleties of Balinese gamelan.
