Voices of Papua

Traditional Papuan music is one of the most ancient music traditions in the world, dating from before the arrival of the Austronesians in the 5th century BC. Despite centuries of external influence, such as Catholic missionaries in the 19th century, Australian miners during the gold rush and most recently, pop music, it has managed to preserve its roots.
Coming from different regions, the five singers of Voices of Papua demonstrate the diversity and beauty of their numerous musical traditions. Among them, you will hear aimunabai (ballads about ancestors) of the Yapen people, and kankarem, a ceremonial song of the Biaks.
