Wayang Hip Hop

As the name suggests, Wayang Hip Hop is an unlikely combination of two cultures that appear to be totally separate: the ancient Javanese tradition of wayang kulit (shadow theatre) and the hip-hop of young, urban and globalized Indonesian youth.
With humour and irreverence, Wayang Hip Hop adapts ancient Javanese stories and sayings to address contemporary problems. Dressed in semi-traditional, half-grunge costumes, the singers rap their criticism of their puppets’ addictive habits. Breaking the ancient rules of wayang kulit, Wayang Hip Hop have nevertheless succeeded in firing up the interest of a new generation in this tradition.
