Carmien Michels' (1990) art balances between writing and performance, between the urban and the classical. She studied diction at the Royal Conservatoire of Antwerp. As a graduation project, she wrote her debut novel We zijn water, published by De Bezige Bij in 2013. One year later, it made the shortlist for De Debuutprijs and De Bronzen Uil. Her second novel Vraag het aan de bliksem (Uitgeverij Polis) appeared in September 2015. In 2011, she won the Dutch NTR Radio Prize. During the finals of the 2014 Belgian Poetry Slam Championship, she won the audience award. In January 2016, she won the Dutch Championship Poetry Slam and that same year, she won bronze at the World Championship in Paris. In 2017, she wrote her poetry debut while abroad. In addition, she teaches and collaborates with artists of all kinds.
