Part of “Family Portraits"
In 1988 two of Romania’s biggest football teams played a friendly match on the snow-covered pitch of its national stadium. The night before, Corneliu Porumboiu (just 7 years old), received a phone-call threatening his father to return home in a coffin, should he continue to referee. Twenty-five years later, father and son re-watch that fateful game, passing back-and-forth a conversation that touches upon everything from football, aesthetics, to life under Communism. Porumboiu’s most daring and personal film, The second game is a candid exploration of the boundaries that bond father-son, referee-players, director-actors.
