One of the most maligned films of Romanian cinema (heavily censored over 18 viewing sessions) also happens to be one of the funniest, liveliest and most endearingly honest portrayals of the bucolic burlesque of human nature in village life under Communism. Using a mix of actors and non-professionals, Iosif Demian tells the story of proud and ambitious Ene Lelea, the president of a village cooperative struggling to balance his professional duties with his personal life whose wife has left him (after two days of marriage!) for next-door neighbour Bigu, recently released from prison.
Europalia Romania is proud to be screening for the first time internationally a recently digitized early ‘cut’ of the film.
