A milestone of Romanian cinema and a direct influence for the New Wave that was to come, sees director Mircea Daneliuc double as lead protagonist Nelu, a TV cameraman who falls for Ani, one of the minor offenders interviewed for a feature on people caught without a trainticket. Torn between his casual-but-stable relationship with his colleague Luiza and the intense attraction to wayward Ani, Nelu’s indecisiveness gives a raw, heart-wrenching portrait of liberation and social(ist) conformity, filtered through Daneliuc’s cine-verité camerawork and improvised dialogues.
