The year is 1993, the veil of Communism has lifted and Romania sees its ruined society struggling to adapt its economy, overnight, to Capitalism. Vasile, a cinema manager struggling to make ends meet, finds out his wife is expecting again, complicating his and his family’s precarious existence. A product of the survivalist consumerism of post-89 Romania, he will stop at nothing to have the abortion happen and turn a profit in the process. An official selection of the 1993 Berlinale, The Conjugal Bed remains Daneliuc’s most incisive indictment of 1990s Romania, a tenebrously dark comedy and histrionic x-ray of Romania’s transition years.
The Conjugal Bed is part of (Mal)Adjustment.
