Nan Achnas behaalde haar diploma met specialisatie regie aan de faculteit film en televisie van het Jakarta Institute of the Arts. Daarna volgde zij nog extra studies aan de University of East Anglia (VK). Momenteel beëindigt zij haar doctoraat aan de School of Art, Design and Media, NTU. 

Nan maakte al verschillende fictiefilms zoals  Kuldesak, The Flag, Whispering Sands en The Photograph, die de Grote Prijs won op het Internationaal filmfestival van Karlovy Vary. Ook won ze  prijzen voor verschillende documentaires (o.a. The Little Gayo Singer Invisible Garments, Expensive Soles en Soul Custodian). Zij produceerde films zoals  Pesantren: 3 Wishes 3 Loves, Khalifah en The Window in een regie van Nurman Hakim, die ook in de prijzen vielen.

Kuldesak is an omnibus film on the lives and problems of young urbans of the 90s in Jakarta. It is a mixture of comedy, drama and action. The film mainly deals with how one struggles to achieve one’s dream or happiness and confronts changes of values in a modern city dwelling. 

Set right before the downfall of Soeharto, the film tells of four young people are facing different situations in their lives. These circumstances demand them to make a choice. The film that started the New Indonesian Cinema.

Three teenagers Huda, Rian, and Syahid attend a pesantren (Islamic religious school) in a small Indonesian village. With only a month left before graduation their lives change dramatically when they are suddenly arrested on suspicions of terrorist ties following 11 September 2001.
