The Colour of Andalusia

  • DE SINGEL, Antwerp

Fahmi Alqhai is a brilliant gamba player and one of the best interpreters of early music. Born in Seville in 1976 to a Syrian father and a Palestinian mother, he spent the first eleven years of his life in Syria, where he took music lessons from an early age. He perfected his skills — self-taught — in Spain, before going in 1994 to study viola da gamba at the Seville Conservatory.
With his expressive Accademia del Piacere, he explores the boundaries of early music. The program connects old Spanish masters like Diego Ortiz and Gaspar Sanz with the turbulent energy of flamenco and free improvisation.
