The musical leitmotif of this full-length dance marathon is Folies d’Espagne, a 15th-century musical theme from Iberia, its heartbeat heard throughout classical music history in arrangements by composers like Bach, Vivaldi and Rachmaninov. Wouter Deltour adapts the compositions into a dazzling, contemporary whole, while Benjamin Abel Meirhaeghe asks seven renowned choreographers to liberate the celebrating body in ‘chapters’ that cross baroque dance with ballroom, jazz and rave. In Chapters of Celebration, the political, ritual echoes of exuberance that humanity seems gradually to have lost resound anew.
