Spanish Sounds

  • Queen Elisabeth Hall, Antwerp

Conductor Juanjo Mena and cellist Asier Polo are highly appreciated for their interpretations of music from their homeland. Together with mezzo-soprano Lidia Vinyes Curtis, they immerse you in a beneficial southern bath. Joaquín Rodrigo’s Concierto in modo galante evokes the atmosphere of Spain of old.
Sánchez-Verdú has composed a new work for the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra. He too looks back to Spain’s glorious past: he found inspiration in the songbook of Joanna of Castile and Philip the Fair. Their marriage brought Spain and Flanders closer together, also musically. This world premiere will be a feast for the ears. With Schumann finally, the program takes an intimate and romantic turn.
