Following the death of her husband, Philip the Handsome, Joanna I of Castile (1479–1555) was imprisoned for the remainder of her life on disputable grounds of insanity. Choreographer La Ribot unites with dancer and actor Juan Loriente to pay tribute to Joanna I in a performance which seeks to convey the mental universe of the captive queen. Taking as his starting point the Cancionero – a collection of songs gifted to Joanna I and her husband as a wedding present – Iñaki Estrada weaves ancient music and electronic sound into a powerful interplay of sound, movement, history and technology.
