The txalaparta is a traditional Basque percussion instrument, played by two people who take turns structuring and breaking the rhythm. Its subtle, powerful polyrhythm is associated with animistic traditions or ancient forms of communication between valleys. The rhythm has long accompanied work in the fields and is associated with cider production and the accompanying festivities. The txalaparta is also a cultural and political symbol, often associated with the Basque resistance. The Zuraburu duo explores the full range of its possibilities, between tradition and innovation.
